May 28, 2005 Yankees 5, Red Sox 4

Strat-O-Matic Report

Another hard to swallow loss as an Edgar "Butterfingers" Renteria error with the bases loaded and 2 out allows the Yanks to score an extra run in the 8th. It proved costly as the Big Papi homer off Rivera in the 9th would have otherwise tied the game. Sox lose their 5th straight and sit 13 1/2 games behind the first place Yanks. I should have blogged the game before this one too, where the Yanks hit 8 homeruns and the Red Sox hit 4 in an ugly 14-5 Yankees win, but I forgot too. Maybe that is a good thing, as that was one UGLY game!

55,573 fans watched an exciting game at Yankee Stadium. The New York (AL)
Yankees topped the Boston Red Sox by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.

New York (AL) came up with the deciding runs in the 8th inning with 2 runs
utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Gary Sheffield started the
attack as he delivered a one-base hit. Hideki Matsui stepped up to the plate
and he was hit by a pitch. Alex Rodriguez then delivered a base-hit which
scored a run. Tino Martinez struck out, unable to help the rally. Jason
Giambi stepped into the box and drew a walk to load the bases. Jorge Posada
added to the uprising and reached on an error scoring the final run of the
inning. Boston threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Tom Gordon(3-0) went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the victory.
Gordon got help from Mariano Rivera who earned his 17th save. John
Halama(1-4) was given the loss in relief. He gave up 2 hits and 1 walk in
2/3 of an inning.

'You have to give Boston credit, they fought us tough to the end' Joe Torre
said. 'It could have gone either way, but I'm glad we pulled out the
victory.'
