April 17, 2005

Strat-O-Matic Report

Probably the strangest beginning to a game I have ever had. The Sox after 2 innings had 3 runs on zero hits. 3 straight walks, a wild pitch and a sac fly in the first and a 2 base error, another wild pitch and another sac fly in the second. Tampa blew it open in the 8th inning with the first 7 batters reaching base and scoring 8 runs in the inning.

In a one-sided affair the Tampa Bay Devil Rays batters pounded the Boston Red
Sox pitchers for 12 runs while Scott Kazmir(2-1), with relief help from Seth
McClung, allowed Boston 4 runs.

Tampa Bay bats came alive with a big top of the 8th inning when they exploded
for 8 runs on 7 hits. The big moment was provided by Jorge Cantu who
disappointed the partisan crowd when he doubled plating two runs. Tampa Bay
out-hit Boston for the game, 16 hits to 4.

Tim Wakefield(1-1) was hit with the loss. He allowed 9 hits and 2 walks in 7
innings.

I hate the Yankees!!

Strat-O-Matic Report

Wild one this game. After the Yankees retake the lead in the top of the 8th, Big Papi's solo shot ties it back up. Sheffield put the Yanks back on top in the 12th with a homer, but Manny's over the monster shot tied it back up in the bottom of the 12th. Yanks score the winning runs in the 14th on a single that gets past Manny for a 2 run scoring error.

Right fielder Gary Sheffield had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the New York (AL) Yankees
outscored the Boston Red Sox in 14 innings 11 to 9.

The score was tied at 8 after nine. New York (AL) won the hard fought contest
in the 14th inning. After an out was recorded, Derek Jeter began the New
York (AL) spurt when he doubled. Sheffield struck out, unable to help the
rally. Hideki Matsui then delivered a single, and an error was also
committed, bringing in a run. Alex Rodriguez stepped in and he doubled
scoring the final run of the inning. A wild affair, this game saw the lead
change 6 times.

The victory went to Mariano Rivera(1-0) who went 3 innings, allowing 1 run.
Matt Mantei(0-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. He surrendered 4 hits
and no walks in 2 innings.

Sox home opener

Strat-O-Matic Report

Not as good as his first game, but a fairly good start by Wakefield and everybody except Damon getting at least one hit helped the Sox beat the Yanks in the Fenway opener. First loss for the Yankees who started the season 6-0. Ortiz now has 5 homers in the first 6 games.

David Ortiz slammed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Boston Red Sox outscored
the Toronto Blue Jays 7 to 3.

Ortiz was really in 'the zone'. He ripped a base-knock which scored a run in
the 1st inning, lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 4th inning, lashed a
single resulting in a run in the 8th inning and cracked a solo homerun (his
3rd of the season) in the 9th inning. Boston ended up with 14 hits for the
game while Toronto had 11.

Bronson Arroyo(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 2 runs. The losing pitcher was Dave Bush(0-1). Ortiz was in a good
mood after the game, 'I'm just seeing and hitting the ball real well now. I
made some adjustments last week and they are paying off. That's what this
game is about. making adjustments as the season goes along.'

In a thriller the New York (AL) Yankees staged a dramatic comeback over the
Boston Red Sox winning by a score of 3 to 2 at Yankee Stadium.

New York (AL) came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
with 3 runs using 3 hits. Hideki Matsui led off and keyed the rally when he
doubled. Jorge Posada followed and he slapped a single which scored a run.
Jason Giambi then lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 1st
of the season) giving New York (AL) the victory and sending the 44,108
home-town fans home happy. New York (AL) had only 6 hits for the afternoon.

Tanyon Sturtze(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings.
Keith Foulke(0-1) absorbed the loss in relief. 'That was exciting!,' Posada
said. 'I would have paid money to watch this one.'

Great Sox comeback (almost)

Strat-O-Matic Report

Figured I would post the first Sox blog. Great comeback, but not quite enough, as an A-Rod single wins it. The 15 LOB by the Sox and the lousy start by Clement didn't help any. That 6 run inning was capped bu three straight homers by Trot, Manny and Big Papi. I think that is the first time any of my teams have hit three straight homers.

Phillies opener

Strat-O-Matic Report

Much better outcome in the Phillies opener. A 3-run Abreau homer was the highlight as the Phils win over the Nationals in the Nats first ever game. Nats made it interesting in the 9th, first and second with no out and a run already in, but a DP quieted the rally.
