Left fielder Pat Burrell launched 2 homeruns at Citizen's Bank Park as the
Philadelphia Phillies embarrassed the Cincinnati Reds by the lopsided score
of 14 to 0.

It seemed that Cincinnati pitching was serving up softballs for Burrell to
hit. He cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 1st inning, hit a
'grand salami' to the delight of his teammates (his 6th of the season) in the
7th inning and slapped a base-hit plating a run in the 8th inning.
Cincinnati was out-hit by Philadelphia, 13 hits to 4.

The winning pitcher was Vicente Padilla(3-1) who allowed no runs in 7 innings.
Elizardo Ramirez(0-1) was hit with the loss. He allowed 3 hits and 6 walks
in 6 innings.

'Actually, I didn't feel that comfortable at the plate today' Burrell said
after the game. 'Despite that, I'm happy with the results!

History was made in this game. Not only did the Red Sox get clobbered, 16-0, they were also no-hit!! Gil Meche pitches a no-hitter as the Mariners light up the scoreboard against 5 Sox pitchers. It was a 1-0 Mariners lead until the bottom fell out from the 5th inning on, as Meche mowed the Sox down. I will have to find out what the highest scoring no-hitter is and let you know, because I am damn curious now.

History was made in Seattle as Gil Meche(3-3) tossed a no-hitter and the
Seattle Mariners defeated the Boston Red Sox by the score of 16 to 0.

Meche gave the home town fans an afternoon that they'll never forget. He
walked 3 Boston batters. The tension started to build around the 6th inning.
By the 9th inning the crowd was electrified. Seattle lit up the scoreboard
in the 5th inning when they had 5 runs on 6 hits and the 6th inning with 5
runs on 4 hits. Seattle finished with 19 hits in the victory.

The losing pitcher was Tim Wakefield(3-2). He got hit pretty hard, allowing 8
hits and 2 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings. After the game, Meche was heard to
say, 'This is something I have dreamt about since I was a little boy - to
have it come true is just amazing!'

In the ultimate laugher, the Sox clobber the A's by the score of 16-0. They scored 10 runs in the second inning before even getting an out! I put the scoresheet in with the blog so you could see for yourself how the inning went. Bronson Arroyo also had his second straight scoreless start, and has gone 15 innings in his last 2 starts without allowing a run. Even brought in good ol' Cla Meridith for his big league debut figuring with that big of a lead it was the perfect time. He actually pitched a scoreless inning, too!!

Tough loss for the Phillies as 2 homers by Derrek Lee is the difference. Phils scored 2 in the 9th and has runners on 2nd and 3rd, but Ryan Howard strikes out to end the game. The 10 K by Myers is the Phillie high for the season so far. Has the Phillies won, they would have gone into first place, but instead they sit 1/2 game behind the Nationals.

pitching duel at Fenway Park. The Boston Red Sox eventually emerged as
victors over the Seattle Mariners by the score of 2 to 1.

Miller gave a fine effort for Boston. He went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 4
hits and 7 walks. Seattle threatened in the 9th but their rally came up
short.

Miller got relief help from Keith Foulke who gained credit for his 8th save.
'It was a tough one to lose' said Mike Hargrove 'We'll get them next time
out.'

The second great start by Jeremi Gonsalez in a row (14 IP total with 5 hits and 1 run allowed in the 2 starts) goes for naught as the Sox seem to forget that you have to score runs in order to win a game. Mariners win the first game of a doubleheader, 1-0.

The first shutout for either the Sox or Phils almost goes to Bronson Arroyo, but after walking 2 in the 9th and his pitch count into the 120's, Embree comes in to get 2 lefties and ends up with a save. Jason Johnson, the Tigers starter, had only 5 strikeouts in 20 something innings for the season, and of course gets 8 K's! He doesn't even have a strikeout on his pitching card!! I don't know if you have noticed it too, but the Sox definitely strike out a lot.

The Phillies also pull off a nice comeback win. Dontrelle Wills was in control for the Marlins throughout the game and also hit a home run, but after walking the first batter in the 9th, Todd Jones blows it as the Phils get a triple and single to tie it. In the 10th, a Leiberthal double, sac bunt and a Rollins single win the game for the Phils. On a side note, Aaron Fultz has started the season off with 14 scoreless innings in relief, much better than any of the other relievers on the team.

Nice comeback win for the Sox. After Arroyo only goes 3 1/3 and leaves with the Sox trailing 7-2, two hit refief by Dinardo, Neal, Myers and Timlin allowed them to slowly claw back in the game. Manny's 3-run homer in the 9th put the Sox ahead, and Foulke goes 1-2-3 in the 9th for the save. Maybe now they will finally start winning like they should be!!

three-run homer (his 10th of the season). Keith Foulke was perfect in relief
