July 16, 2005 Red Sox 10, Yankees 7

Strat-O-Matic Report

Even thought the Sox were outhit by the Yanks, they win the game because of two huge hits. Doug Mirabelli hit a grand slam in the 6th, and Bill Mueller follows with a grand slam of his own in the 7th. First time that I can remember in my SOM that the same team hit two grand slams in one game. Even with the win, the Sox are 4-8 against the Yankees for the season, with two of those wins goming in this series so far. On a side note, Matt Clement continues his recent hot streak (6-0, 3.18 ERA in last 6 starts) while Randy Johnson continues to struggle. After an 8-0, 1.80 to start the season, he is 4-6, 6.22 since.

July 14, 2005 Red Sox 5, Yankees 4 (10)

Strat-O-Matic Report

When you are hot, these kind of games go your way. The Sox got to Mike Mussina early, with Kevin Millar's 3-run homerun capping a 4 run first inning. Mussina then settled down as the Yankees slowly chipped away at the lead and tied the game. It stayed tied until Mark Bellhorn hits a walk off homer in the bottom of the 10th as the Red Sox win their 9th straight. Curt Schilling gets the win in his first game back with 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief.

offense put up 4 runs on the scoreboard in the 1st inning and won by the
slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.

Both teams were tied at 4 runs apiece after nine innings. Boston won the game
in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Mark Bellhorn lofted a
solo-blast 'downtown' (his 12th of the season) resulting in a mighty exciting
win for Boston and the 33,948 home town fans in attendance. Boston had 10
hits for the night.

The victory was credited to Curt Schilling(1-2) who went 1 and 2/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Scott Proctor(0-2) took the loss in relief. He pitched 3
and 1/3 innings and surrendered 2 hits and 1 walk.

July 10, 2005 Nationals 10, Phillies 9

Strat-O-Matic Report

Certainly no lack of offense in this game, with 31 hits betwen both teams (18 for the Phils, and still lost). Highlights include 2 homers for Brian Scheider, Kenny Lofton's 5 for 6, and Todd Pratt's 5 for 5. Phillies had jumped out to a 5-0 lead at one point.

Pratt's 5 hit of the game involved a move that I made that I later regreted. Ryan Howard led off the 9th with a single, and David Bell hit a single, putting runners on first and second. I pinch-ran with Endy Chavez for Bell, figuring Howard was already at second and might score on a hit to the outfield. Pratt then hit a single to the outfield, with a 1-11 chance that Howard would score. I went for it, and Howard was thrown out when it came up a 12. Had i pinch-ran Chavez for Howard, he would have scored because his running is 14. When Jimmy Rollins hit a 3-run homer, had that run scored it would have tied the game. Instead, the Phillies lose by a run.

July 10, 2005 Red Sox 8, Orioles 6

Strat-O-Matic Report

The Sox are unstoppable now, winning their 8th straight and FINALLY go over .500 for the first time all season. Down 5-1, they scored one in the 7th, 2 in the 8th, and 4 runs off B.J. Ryan in the 9th to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. They sweep the four game series from the Birds, and are now 5 1/2 games out of first the closest they have been since late April.

In a great finish the seemingly unstoppable Boston Red Sox came back in the
top of the ninth and held on to win over the Baltimore Orioles by a score of
8 to 6 at Camden Yards.

Boston had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning when they
scored 4 runs on 3 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by David Ortiz who
deflated the crowd as he doubled bringing in two baserunners. Both teams
ended up with 12 on the afternoon.

Mike Timlin(6-2) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings.
B.J. Ryan(0-5) ended up with the loss in relief. He surrendered 4 runs and 3
hits in 1 and 2/3 innings.

Ryan was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get away.
What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans. One minute
things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I get a
chance to redeem myself real soon!'

July 8, 2995 Red Sox 11, Orioles 4

Strat-O-Matic Report

Sox win their 6th straight and climb to within one game of .500, the best record of the season. Arroyo pitches into the 8th for the third straight start, as the bullpen is spared a lot of innings. Orioles did score 3 off of Scott Cassidy, but it didn't make a difference. Hard to believe, but that ERA for Sidney Ponson is correct at 9.04. It actually went down after this game, believe it or not.

July 6, 2005 Red Sox 11, Rangers 7

Strat-O-Matic Report

This game was not as close as the final would make it seem. Rangers starter Chan Ho Park didn't get out of the first inning, allowing 2 hits, 3 walks, a hit batter, and 4 runs. All kinds of Sox runners, with 11 hits and 10 walks. Matt Clement wins hit 5th straight start, and has come along nicely after the horrible beginning to the season. Sox 6th win in their last 8 games, and are finally beginning to get hot. About damn time!!

At Ameriquest Field the Boston Red Sox easily handled the Texas Rangers by the
score of 11 to 7.

Boston jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they scored 4
runs on 2 hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Trot Nixon who deflated
the spirits of the home town crowd when he belted a three-run homer (his 8th
of the season). Boston finished with 11 hits in the victory.

Matt Clement(9-4) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing
5 runs. Chan Ho Park(5-6) was given the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 2 hits
in 1/3 of an inning.

mid-season Phillies stats

Strat-O-Matic Report

I have a cool idea. When the three teams (Red Sox, Phillies and Nationals) reach 81 games, the season midpoint, we can post the stats on the blog and compare them. Bound to be interesting, especially comparing the Sox stats, since we both manually play them. Phillies hit 81 games first, so here are those. The Nationals so for have 80 games, so they will be next. Sox now have 79, so two more games for them.
